Chapter 7 Means Test Screening Calculator

Educational estimate only. This tool helps you explore screening thresholds and prepare questions for a consultation, whatever the result.

Important: This calculator does not provide legal advice or guarantee Chapter 7 eligibility. Final qualification depends on complete legal analysis by a licensed attorney.

Median data verified September 17, 2026. The calculator selects the November 2025 or April 2026 table by filing date. The current table lists $66,235 / $79,574 / $88,041 / $98,602 for households of one through four, plus $11,100 per additional person. Future dates require rechecking. Deductions remain user-entered estimates, not automatically applied IRS allowances. View official median data.

1) Filing Basics

Household size (adjustable)

Start with composition below. You can manually override household size with confirmation.

Auto-set from composition.

Who counts in household?
  1. Count yourself.
  2. Count your spouse if you live together, even if not filing jointly.
  3. Count dependents you support and can claim (or reasonably could claim).
  4. Count other people in your economic unit with shared income/expenses.
  5. Do not count roommates with separate finances.

Courts can apply different household-size tests. Attorney review is required.

2) Income (Last 6 Full Calendar Months)

Enter countable monthly income. Use gross wages before payroll deductions. For self-employment/business, use net after ordinary and necessary operating expenses. Do not include Social Security in countable income.

3) Monthly Allowable Deduction Estimate

Screening estimate only. Final deductions must follow Official Form 122A line-item rules.

4) Debt for Conditional 25% Test

What an estimate can and cannot tell you

A likely-pass estimate is a starting point for discussion. A different result also deserves review: the inputs, allowable deductions, exceptions, and alternatives may need closer attention. The court decides legal issues; this tool does not.

Changing filing status does not automatically adjust income or deductions. Social Security is excluded from the calculation. Household definitions are simplified and may differ from the approach applicable to a particular case.
